What is H5P?

H5P is an authoring tool that makes it easy to create, share and reuse learning activities.

H5P allows users to create rich and interactive web experiences - all you need is a web browser and a web site with an H5P plugin.

Websites that support the H5P plug in are WordPress, Pressbooks, Drupal and Moodle.

Learning management systems (LMS) that support H5P integration are Moodle, Brightspace, Blackboard and Canvas (paid account).

Learner reports for H5P require a paid account, otherwise it is free to use.

Once your H5P activities are hosted somewhere, you can embed them into any site ... such as the H5P Studio Google site we made.

The Introduction to Blended Learning on this page of the Blended Learning Collection Google site is an embedded H5P presentation.

The Digital Skills Quiz on this page of the Postsecondary Digital Skills Readiness Assessment Google site is also an embedded H5P presentation.

Using H5P in your teaching

H5P is asynchronous, which extends the classroom. Asynchronous learning provides materials that learners can access at any time. H5P can provide resources for an engaging on-demand learning experience. H5P can provide immediate feedback, helping students learn from mistakes in a safe environment. Automatic digital feedback can reinforce achievement, avoid misunderstanding and maintain engagement.

  • It is well suited for independent asynchronous learning
  • It capitalizes on curiosity and exploratory approach to learning
  • It is useful to “chunk” information to help learners process and remember complex or difficult concepts better
  • It improves engagement and promotes active learning and engage with problem solving or gamification
  • Formative assessments with feedback can consolidate knowledge.
  • Retrieval practice with formative (or low stakes) interactions over time is known to aid learning
  • It helps with creating more engaging materials for self-directed and active learning
  • It allows students to control how fast they go through the interaction, unlike a live lecture or videos where control is limited.
  • It can be combined with other online tools or synchronous learning activities
